A 63-year-old woman has drowned in a backyard pool at Dapto on the New South Wales south coast.
Police say the Korean national was carrying her 12-month-old granddaughter in a harness when she fell into the pool.
The woman's grandson raised the alarm and the pair were pulled from the water.
Paramedics were able to resuscitate the baby but not the 63-year-old.
The girl was taken to Wollongong Hospital in a critical condition.
Acting Inspector Jason Harrisson from Lake Illawarra Police says it appears the woman may have suffered a stroke.
"There had been some medical history that might suggest she'd had some type of medical turn and possibly has landed straight in the pool with the baby on her chest area," he said.
"There isn't anything suspicious at this stage or concerns regarding the state of mental health and it looks like a tragic incident that has unfolded."
