A NSW man who allegedly tortured his mother's cat after it ran away during a flea treatment will face court on animal cruelty charges.
Police said the man, 51, was at his Illingari Circuit home in Taree on the state's north coast on January 9 when his 75-year-old mother asked him to help give her cat a flea treatment.
During the treatment the cat jumped off the elderly woman's lap and ran into a bedroom, police said in a statement.
They said the man followed the cat into the bedroom and closed the door, before allegedly torturing and killing the animal.
Police have charged the man with torturing, beating and causing prolonged suffering to an animal.
He has been given conditional bail and will appear in Taree Local Court on February 12.
