Divers marooned off South Australia's south-east coast watched helplessly from a reef as their boat washed up on shore and was ransacked by thieves.
Police say the two men were diving near Lipson Reef in Rivoli Bay, five kilometres south of Beachport, when they resurfaced to find their boat had broken anchor and had drifted away.
While the men were marooned, they saw the boat wash up on shore in the distance and then a car stop next to it.
An outboard motor, a battery, a Fishfinder and other fishing equipment went missing, and police say it is likely they were stolen by the people in the car.
Local fisherman Craig Reilly rescued the pair about 11:00pm ACDT.
He says the outcome could have been worse if the men had tried to swim to shore in the large swell.
"They were just starting to get a little bit cold, so they were just starting to cuddle up to each other a bit and trying to keep calm," he said.
"A few things were going through their mind as to what to do next... but they were pretty certain they were just going to sit it out on the reef.
"That was probably the most important decision they made, I think."
