GUNMEN STOLE 50 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF DIAMONDS IN BRUSSELS ON TUESDAY--WITHOUT FIRING A SINGLE SHOT.
OFFICIALS SAY THE ROBBERS MADE A HOLE IN A SECURITY FENCE AT BRUSSELS' INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT...THEN EIGHT MASKED MEN DROVE ONTO THE TARMAC IN TWO BLACK CARS.
(Brussels Airport Spokesperson, Jan Van der Cruysse)
"They have stopped near the aircraft and, heavily armed, they have taken a number of goods from the hold of the aircraft after which they have sped away by car and used the same exit were they entered the airport territory,"
INVESTIGATORS SAY THE ENTIRE ROBBERY TOOK PLACE IN JUST A FEW MINUTES...THE PILOTS AND THE SECURITY GUARD WERE HELD AT GUNPOINT--BUT NO ONE WAS INJURED...THE GUNMEN CAME READY FOR A FAST GET AWAY-- DRESSED IN CLOTHING THAT RESEMBLED POLICE UNIFORMS AND DRIVING WITH BLUE POLICE LIGHTS.
SO FAR POLICE HAVE FOUND ONE BURNT-OUT VEHICLE CLOSE TO THE AIRPORT...THEY HAVE DECLINED TO SAY WHERE THE SHIPMENT ORIGINATED AND WHERE IT WAS HEADED...ONLY THAT THE PLANE WAS BOUND FOR SWITZERLAND. THEY ARE STILL LOOKING FOR CLUES.
