About 50 mothers are staging a 'nurse-in' in front of an inner-western Sydney cafe, after a woman was asked to cover-up while breast feeding in there at the weekend.

The Satellite Cafe in Newtown has issued an apology to the woman, saying the staff member who made the request was unaware of legislation giving woman the right to breast feed in public.

Nurse-in organiser Victoria Brookman says the protest is still going ahead to bring attention to the issue.

"Well, we've seen the apology and we applaud the fact they've made an effort to make amends," she said.

"Obviously that's really good, it shows a healthy society where people will admit they're in the wrong.

"But we want to make sure that this stops happening all together because this happens all the time."
