' What we do know is that in the contact with the suspect, whose name is Jeremy Goulet, a 35-year old male and resident at the scene, an altercation ensued between the detectives and Mr. Goulet. Both detectives were killed at that scene.'

Our officers set up a perimeter, tried to administer life-saving efforts, and then called for further backup. As all of our organizations arrived on scene, we put together a multi-agency team to secure the area and to attempt to find the suspect.

Chief Vogel and I were just arriving on the scene when the first teams who went out in an active-shooter search pattern encountered Goulet. A short chase ensued, gunfire was exchanged between Goulet and a team comprised of Sheriff's Deputies and Santa Cruz police officers. Goulet was killed at the scene.

My office immediately started a house-to-house search and locked down the neighborhood.

We completed and are just now wrapping up a house-to-house search of the neighborhood to be absolutely certain that there were no other suspects in this incident.

Authorities have released the names of two Santa Cruz, California police officers who were shot and killed Tuesday.
Santa Cruz police Chief Kevin Vogel says Sgt. Loren Butch Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler were shot and killed as they followed up on a sexual assault investigation Tuesday.
Vogel says Baker was a 28-year veteran of the department and Butler was a 10-year veteran of the department.
Vogel says Baker was married and the father of two daughters, while Butler leaves behind two young sons.
Police did not release the ages of the two officers.
The suspect who was also killed in the shooting was identified as 35-year-old Jeremy Goulet.
