The mayor of the Cape York township of Hope Vale in far north Queensland has been arrested after allegedly trying to incite a fight.
Hope Vale Mayor Greg McLean has spent the night in custody, charged with assaulting police, obstructing police and affray.
Officers say they saw him carrying a spear on a local street about 6:00pm (AEST) last night.
They say he surrendered the weapon but tried to start a fight with another group of people, ignoring warnings to stop.
Police say a struggle ensued when they tried to arrest the mayor and had to use capsicum spray to detain him.
He is due to face court this morning in Cooktown, north of Cairns.
Several other people were also arrested in relation to the incident.
