Organisers have called a lay day for the men's and women's world surfing events on the Gold Coast.

Poor wave conditions forced the early decision to call off action on Friday, with bigger swells anticipated over the weekend.

The Roxy Pro has reached the semi-final stage with three Australians, Stephanie Gilmore, Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons, all into the final four but it's the men's event which is lagging due to the conditions.

Only the first round has been completed in the event, which has until March 13 to be decided.

The next call on whether to resume the event will be made at 6.30am AEST on Saturday.
