Police have confirmed a man found dead in inner Melbourne had been stabbed numerous times.
The man was still alive when he was found by a council worker about 5:00am (AEDT) in Fitzroy, but he died later.
Police have identified the victim and confirmed he was 21 years old but have not released his name.
Earlier today, Detective Sergeant Allan Birch said: "The deceased male appears to be in his early 20s, [he was wearing] general street clothes - nothing that would give us a clear indication of where he had come from.
"The council worker saw a male that appeared to be distressed and on approaching him, saw the young man collapse. [He] called triple-0 but unfortunately the young man could not be revived."
Police hope to look at security vision from the many nightclubs and bars in the area.
"It is a business district and we'd be hoping that there'll be physical witnesses, people that can come forward, and also perhaps video footage," Detective Sergeant Birch said.
"We're not aware of any other witnesses ... I would think there would have been people moving about about 5:00am this morning and that they would come forward and assist us."
The homicide squad has finished examining the scene and Johnston Street is open to traffic between Brunswick and Nicholson streets.
