Strong winds have hit Victoria, with the weather set to deteriorate further.

Gusts of up to 100km/h were recorded in Melbourne on Thursday morning, bringing trees down and keeping emergency crews busy.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts the bad weather to continue to Thursday afternoon, issuing a severe weather warning for damaging winds for most of Victoria.

Severe thunderstorms and hail are forecast for western Victoria, while gale and storm warnings are in place for the state's waters.
