A Sydney man convicted of killing his gay lover in a violent attack has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison, after facing an unprecedented three trials over the same death.

Philip Leung, 51, was found guilty by a NSW Supreme Court jury in November last year of the manslaughter of his partner Mario Guzzetti at their Alexandria home in April 2007.

In handing down his sentence at the NSW Supreme Court on Friday, Justice Derek Price said he was satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Leung hit Mr Guzzetti repeatedly on the chin and the chest with a juicer container, thus causing him to fall backwards and hit his head.

"This was a violent attack carried out in anger," Justice Price said.
