DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — St. Nicholas Abbey outdueled Japanese favorite Gentildonna to win the $5 million Dubai Sheema Classic and hand trainer Aidan O'Brien his second win in the Dubai World Cup on Saturday.
Trailbrazer was out of the gates first but was overtaken by Irish-bred Shareta who held off St. Nicholas Abbey and Gentildonna at the halfway point. Gentildonna, which had won seven of its nine starts, moved in front with 300 meters left but couldn't hold off St. Nicholas Abbey who finished second in the race last year.
St. Nicholas Abbey won by more than two lengths with Very Nice Name third.
O'Brien won his second race after a victory with Lines of Battle in the UAE Derby.
