Taxi drivers have threatened to blockade entrances to Melbourne Airport to protest against new cab rank rules.

A text message circulating among drivers has urged them to block all entries to the airport between 10am and noon (AEST) Friday, in response to the airport scrapping a queue for cabbies taking short-distance fares.

"We can't just be quiet and accept this abuse," the text message partly says.

The Victorian Taxi Association has criticised the planned protest, while Melbourne Airport says it will have extra security and plans in place to prevent inconvenience to passengers.
