SALVADOR, Brazil (AP) — Uruguay and Nigeria were deadlocked at 1-1 at halftime in a key Group B match at the Confederations Cup on Thursday.
Malaga defender Diego Lugano put Uruguay ahead in the 19th minute before a sparse crowd at the Arena Fonte Nova and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel equalized for Nigeria in the 37th.
Celebrating his 100th appearance for Uruguay, Diego Forlan set up the opener with a cross and Edinson Cavani fooled Nigeria's defense by letting the ball pass through his legs to the waiting Lugano, who slotted it in from close range.
For his goal, Mikel dribbled by Lugano and launched a powerful shot into the top of the net.
Nigeria can advance to the semifinals with a win, while a draw or Uruguay win would leave qualification open for both.
