President Barack Obama has a hopeful story to tell about African democracy during his first stop in a weeklong trip designed to re-engage with the continent.

Obama plans to meet Thursday with Senegal's president, Macky Sall, who successfully ousted an incumbent president last year to avert an impending constitutional crisis.

Obama also plans to tour of Goree Island, where some accounts say millions of Africans were shipped off into slavery.

It's the first of two island visits Obama has planned for the trip to highlight racial atrocities of the past. The second is scheduled for Sunday at South Africa's Robben Island, where anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years.

Mandela is hospitalized and gravely ill, which could affect Obama's plans.
