A top aide to Mohammad Morsi says a military coup is underway after the embattled Egyptian president defied an army deadline to yield to protesters.

After saying he would rather die than quit, Mr Morsi proposed a consensus government as a way out of the country's political crisis.

The army has not formally announced its next move, but its troops and armoured cars have been deployed across Cairo.

The military has reportedly erected barbed wire around the barracks where Mr Morsi is working, taken over state TV and slapped a travel ban on the president.
