Tourists are being urged to evacuate a coastal resort about 200 kilometres north of Broome, as a bushfire burns close by.

It broke out about an hour ago and is burning in scrub close to the Kooljaman eco-resort at Cape Leveque.

The fire is moving fast in a northerly direction, and is out of control and unpredictable.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued an emergency warning, saying people should leave the area immediately.

DFES says it is working with tourism operators to evacuate those in danger.

It is the middle of the Kimberley tourist season and hundreds of people are currently holidaying along the peninsula.

The department says a helicopter will fly over the area to establish the fire's exact size and location.
