Garbage collectors in Canberra have walked off the job over an industrial dispute.
Cleanaway staff may not collect household recycling and garbage across south Canberra on Friday, including in Barton, Deakin, Kingston, Narrabundah, O'Malley, Phillip, Red Hill and Yarralumla.
Residents in the inner-north suburbs of Acton, Ainslie, Braddon, Campbell, Dickson, Downer, Hackett, Lyneham, O'Connor, Reid, Turner and Watson may also be affected.
The ACT Government recently awarded the household garbage and recycling collection contract to SITA Australia, which is expected to start in October.
Klaus Pinkas from the Transport Workers Union (TWU) says some workers could receive a $200 a week pay cut when the contract changes hands, despite a commitment from the Government that there would be no loss of wages and conditions.
"We're trying to get the guys back to work. Don't believe for one instance this was done lightly," he said.
"We had discussions this morning, we had a call from the guys, they'd had enough."
The ACT Government says residents should leave their bins out until collected.
It says Cleanaway is seeking an urgent resolution of the issue so collections can resume.
