Essendon put a trying few weeks behind it with a spirited six-point win over top-eight rivals Carlton at the MCG on Saturday night.
The Bombers came out on top in a see-sawing encounter to ultimately win 12.10 (82) to 9.22 (76).
In Saturday night's other match, , winning by 74 points at Subiaco Oval.
At the MCG, Carlton led by a single point after the first quarter, and snatched back the lead by the end of the half after Essendon hit back with two goals.
The Blues looked to be pushing on with the win when they kicked four goals to Essendon's two in the third period.
But the Bombers regrouped in the stanza that matters, blanking Carlton and kicking four majors to steal the win at the death.

Hayden Ballentyne and Matthew Pavlich combined with four goals each as Fremantle went third on the AFL ladder with an emphatic 74-point win over Port Adelaide at Subiaco Oval.
The Dockers moved four points clear of Sydney with a 21.8 (134) to 9.6 (60) triumph.
Freo led from first to last, kicking five goals in the first, second and third periods, while Port could only amass four goals by three-quarter time.
The Dockers capped the match off with six goals in a final quarter shoot out, still eclipsing the Power's improved five majors.
