Bananas can no longer be brought into Queensland under new rules to stop the spread of a disease that kills crops.

Agriculture Minister John McVeigh announced the legislative change on Wednesday after the banana freckle disease was found on fruit in the Northern Territory.

Authorities fear it could spread through Queensland and destroy crops.

However, Mr McVeigh says there is only a low risk given there is no commercial banana trade between the state and NT.

"This change would only affect the general public or farmers travelling between the states," he said.
