Police divers have searched an abandoned mine shaft in the state's central west for the remains of a man allegedly murdered in the area.

Andrew Russell, 23, was last seen on June 2, 2009, on Slim Street at Bathurst.

Two men, aged 25 and 26, were charged with his murder in January 2013 and are currently before the courts, police said.

The divers searched the abandoned mine, near Sofala, for Mr Russell's remains on Friday.

Officers have already searched a nearby waste management site as well as properties in the Bathurst and Mudgee areas.

Police said the searches had so far been carried out "without success".

"Our investigators have worked tirelessly to determine exactly what happened to Mr Russell and while we have laid charges the search for his remains continues," Chifley Police Inspector Mark Wall said in a statement.
