Police won't confirm reports that a body found next to a road in southeast Queensland was decapitated.
Rural fire fighters found a body on the side of Cedar Pocket Road at Cedar Pocket, about 10km east of Gympie, about 6.45pm (AEST) on Thursday after attending to a blaze in the area.
Police believe the man, who is yet to identified, was murdered.
Detective Senior Sergeant David Briese told reporters the cause of death is not yet known.
When asked if he could confirm reports that the body was decapitated and missing limbs, Sen Sgt Briese said: "Again, I can't comment on the nature of the injuries at this time".
"There are visible injuries but I can't comment on the nature of the injuries."
He said the blaze and the body were connected but the fire didn't cause his death.
"Inquiries are still being conducted in relation to that but we believe ... the deceased did not die as a result of the fire," he said.
Sen Sgt Briese declined to say whether any weapons were found.
Police are searching for clues in the area and want to speak to anyone who was nearby between 4pm and 7pm on Thursday.
