Finals fever gripped viewers on Thursday when the Nine Network's Footy Show's combined to claim the top spot on the ratings ladder.

The NRL and AFL Footy shows pulled a collective 1.202 million viewers to win OzTAM's overnight ratings for the first time this season.

Runner-up for the evening was Nine News (1.196 million), while Seven News (1.149 million) and A Current Affair (956,000) were third and fourth respectively.

The final season of US sitcom How I Met Your Mother got off to a great start for the Seven Network.

The series is being fast-tracked on Seven and drew 677,000 to be the 10th most watched program for the evening.
