A teacher from the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) has been arrested for the production of child pornography.
For legal reasons the man cannot be identified and in unusual circumstances his first appearance in the ACT Magistrates Court last week was closed to the media and public.
But police documents reveal the man was arrested by the Australian Federal Police after a tip-off from Canadian police last year, when his details were linked to downloading child pornography.
A search of his Canberra home last week allegedly uncovered a large number of illegal images and videos including more than 70 that he had personally taken of a young child which appears unconscious or asleep.
The man is facing child sex abuse charges and the matter is due back before the courts later this month.
CIT says they have received no official information from police but take any such allegations against their staff extremely seriously.
