The Broome Port Authority has congratulated Wyndham Port on securing an oil export contract but says it is in a good position to take over the contract in the future.
Buru Energy plans to use Wyndham to temporarily export crude oil from the Canning Basin to Singapore.
The company says Wyndham is a short-term solution because of its size limitations and 1,000 kilometre distance from Buru's oil field.
Broome Port CEO Vic Justice says Broome is 80 kilometres away and it would not take long to carry out the minor upgrades needed for it to export Buru's oil.
"I guess it would depend on whether the work is happening in the wet season or the dry season but conceivably once all the necessary environmental and other approvals have taken place, it could take about six months," he said.
"We set the scene that makes all this possible, that's assuming they do want to go ahead.
"Bearing in mind our proximity to the oilfield it probably would make sense but in terms of the region as a whole, I'm very pleased to see that Wyndham's the beneficiary of this stage one."
