The Whitsunday Sailing Club says a new training academy will be a major drawcard for the region.
The club has been allocated 28 berths and land at the Port of Airlie Development, with planning now started for the facility.
Rear Commodore of training Jim Hayes says it will include classrooms and auditoriums and will be the only facility of its kind in regional Australia.
"We're one of the few places in Australia who are accredited by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to run what's called the WSTC95, which is a bridging course for people who want to go overseas and who want to crew or skipper white boats, or maxi yachts or semi-commercial vessels overseas," he said.
"We want to bring people here to the Whitsundays to train, to learn.
"It's a great place to learn your trade.
"More than anything we just want to have people coming out of our courses with the knowledge and the capabilities to take them anywhere in the world and to get them employment anywhere in the world."
