Golden Circle has announced plans to move beverage manufacturing from Victoria to Queensland by the middle of next year.
The Mill Park facility in Victoria will close with the loss of over 150 jobs, but Golden Circle says the company will inject $8 million into Queensland's Northgate Beverage manufacturing plant alowing it to increase production and the number of shifts.
The general manager of Manufacturing Simon Leonard says the "consolidation of beverage manufacturing will facilitate future growth".
So how will this change to Golden Circle production, impact on local pineapple producers?Rachel McKenzie is the Chief Advocate for peak the horticulture organisation Growcom
She says she is saddened to hear of the job losses in Victoria but says "it is pleasing to note that they will be perhaps providing some job opportunities up here in Queensland and even more gratifying to hear that the processing is not going offshore to New Zealand like the beetroot processing did a few years ago".
However Ms. McKenzie says that despite Golden Circle's investment, growers will not significantly increase planting of pineapple crops and are nervous about the long term future of food processing in Australia.
