Another two Tasmanian primary schools have decided to merge in time for the 2014 school year.

Launceston's Rocherlea and Mayfield primary schools will be merged and become the East Tamar Primary School.

It will be on the site currently occupied by Mayfield Primary.

The school communities will receive $200,000 to help with uniform changes, but overall the Education Department will save $500,000 a year.

The Education Minister, Nick McKim, says there are now five fewer schools in the state since 2011.

"There are a number of communities that are still having discussions," he said.

Two years ago, the Government abandoned plan to force up 20 schools to close after community outrage.

At the time Mr McKim admitted the Government got it wrong. He then set up a community reference group which recommended a process of community-driven mergers.

The department will not say how much is left of a $3.5 million fund to close more schools.
