A new Australian High Commissioner has been appointed for India.
Patrick Suckling will take up his post in New Delhi next month.
He is a career diplomat who has previously been posted to New Delhi and Washington.
Mr Suckling has a post-graduate diploma in Hindi from the University of Sydney.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr says it is an extremely important position because India is one of Australia's largest export markets in the region and is the second largest source of foreign students.
Senator Carr says Mr Suckling will soon host ministerial talks in the capital about economic, security and regional issues.
