The Federal Government has announced new sanctions on Iran to increase pressure on Tehran over its nuclear program.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr says the sanctions affect the financial, trade, energy and transport sectors.
They include a ban on transactions between Australian and Iranian banks, a ban on the export of materials linked to Iran's nuclear program and a ban on the import of natural gas from the country.
"These sanctions further increase pressure on Iran to comply with its nuclear non-proliferation obligations and with UN Security Council resolutions and to engage in serious negotiations on its nuclear program," Senator Carr said in a statement.
He says the sanctions are broadly aligned with measures taken by the European Union and other countries.
The Federal Government will seek public comment on the new sanctions before they are formally implemented.
Tehran denies its nuclear program is for military purposes, insisting it is for civilian use.
